THE PELVIC GIRDLE The 3rd edition of The Pelvic Girdle presents a straightforward and logical approach to the examination, assessment and treatment of the lumbopelvic region and its related disorders. The book follows the 'Integrated Model of Function' originally proposed by Diane Lee and Dr Andry Vleeming. This model is derived from anatomical and biomechanical studies of the pelvis, as well as from clinical experience of treating patients with lumbopelvic and hip pain. It addresses the reasons why the lumbopelvic-hip region is painful and no longer able to sustain and transfer loads, as opposed to seeking to identify pain-generating structures. In this 3rd edition the author has incorporated the key findings of research published from 1999 - 2004, which have relevance for the clinician treating low back and pelvic girdle pain. The clinical content of the book has been entirely rewritten and reorganised as a result. The first four chapters have been updated in the light of this research but Chapters 5–10 are brand new for this edition. Specific changes and additions to the text include:

THE THORAX: AN INTEGRATED APPROACH Acute and chronic thoracic pain is a common problem seen in orthopedic rehabilitation today. Currently, there is very little biomechanical or clinical research available for guidance in evaluation and treatment planning. The Thorax: An Integrated Approach presents an integrated model (Lee & Vleeming) for understanding thoracic function. The principles of this model are derived from lumbopelvic research and provide a foundation from which the practicing clinician can evaluate and treat the thorax. Included with this second edition is a CD-ROM containing video clips of the assessment and treatment techniques as well as patient exercises. Assessment video clips include active and passive mobility and stability techniques. New techniques are presented to analyze the force closure mechanism (dynamic stability) of a thoracic segment. The classification of dysfunction within the thorax has been changed to follow the integrated model of function. New intervention techniques are discussed and demonstrated via video clips on the CD-ROM showing passive and active mobilization and manipulation techniques for the thorax. Restoring Force Closure/Motor Control of the Thorax is a new chapter contributed by Linda-Joy Lee Over 140 photographs and illustrations with detailed descriptions of specific tests and mobility techniques. Full-motion video clips of tests, techniques and exercises are demonstrated on the enclosed CD-ROM.
