| Description : The 3rd edition of The Pelvic Girdle presents a straightforward and logical approach to the examination, assessment and treatment of the lumbopelvic region and its related
disorders. The book follows the 'Integrated Model of Function' originally proposed by Diane Lee and Dr Andry Vleeming. This model
is derived from anatomical and biomechanical studies of the pelvis, as well as from clinical experience of treating patients with lumbopelvic and hip pain. It addresses the reasons why the
lumbopelvic-hip region is painful and no longer able to sustain and transfer loads, as opposed to seeking to identify pain-generating structures.
In this 3rd edition the author has incorporated the key findings of research published from 1999 - 2004, which have relevance for the clinician treating low back and pelvic girdle pain. The
clinical content of the book has been entirely rewritten and reorganised as a result. The first four chapters have been updated in the light of this research but Chapters 5-10 are brand new for
this edition.
Specific changes and additions to the text include: - Updated information on the biomechanics of the lumbopelvic-hip region with specific reference to the recent work of Dr.
Barbara Hungerford
- Important new material on the classification, assessment and treatment of the muscles of the local and global systems, drawing on the latest research of Drs Paul
Hodges, Lorimer Moseley, Peter O'Sullivan and others.
- Specific new clinical tests for analysing load transfer through the pelvis and hip
- Regional tests for the clinical analysis of form closure, force closure and motor control
- The use of real-time ultrasound imaging for augmenting the assessment and treatment of
the muscles of the lumbopelvic local system
- A different way to interpret standard muscle strength and length tests
- Guidance for the clinician on how these tests help when
prescribing manual therapy and/or exercises to improve mobility, stability and motor control of the lumbopelvic-hip
- A comparative review of clinical findings from subjective and
objective examinations for specific lumbar, pelvic girdle and hip impairments, according to the integrated model
- Treatment for specific impairments of the lumbopelvic-hip including
specific manual therapy techniques and 'exercises' for restoring motor control and mobile stability for the lumbopelvic-hip region
- The role of imagery, manual and verbal cueing when training neuromuscular motor control
- New clinical photographs to illustrate all assessment and treatment techniques as
well as exercises.
It has long been recognized that physical factors impact joint function. The Integrated Model of Function developed by Lee and Vleeming suggested that joint
mechanics can be influenced by multiple factors, some intrinsic to the joint itself and some produced by muscle action, which in turn is influenced by the emotional state. The Pelvic Girdle
focuses on the assessment and treatment of the first three components of this model (form closure, force closure and motor control) and on their application to the lumbar spine, pelvic girdle
and hip. It provides a unique integration of the latest research and related clinical material with guidance on how to apply the research evidence in day-to-day clinical practice. The aim is to
help clinicians to improve their ability to accurately assess and safely and effectively treat their patients. No clinician working with patients with back pain or other lumbopelvic-hip related
disorders can afford to be without the wealth of information and clinical guidance that The Pelvic Girdle provides.
"I am a physiotherapist from Sydney. This textbook has enhanced my treatment of the pelvis. It covers the joints, muscles and motor control aspects of the pelvis in a systematic and practical way. I have also completed the course offered by Diane Lee "The Pelvis" and watched the DVD (2 disc version) which have also been well worth the money.
This book is for anyone who is prepared to spend the time learning how to treat this region effectively and comprehensively. I have earnt my my money back many times over by becoming more efficient in my diagnosis and treatment. I can also recommend her book on "The Thorax" - again, practice changing, practical information.
Thank you Diane Lee and LJ Lee for those wonderful texts."
